About Us

GHAROA is non profit registered society formed in 1991 at Lumding by some eminent personalities of Railway who came to Lumding to serve in different capacities  namely Divisional Railway Manager, Engineer, Doctors, Teacher and others, some of them were exponent of classical music some were stage actors, writers, poets and social scientists.

The objectives were to provide need based professional and quality services to the local community. Initiated with cultural and Artistic works and promoting artistic skill among the society. It started Environmental programme from 1992 with emphasis on social forestry and Environmental Education among students. Gradually on the specific needs of the rural community GHAROA started mass immunization, health camps, free clinic, RCH service delivery, alternative livelihood, micro credit and women’s empowerment.

Gharoa is working in  Assam namely in the districts of  Nagaon, Morigaon, Dima Hasso (N.C.Hills), Karbi Anglong, Cachar, Karmigunj and Hailakandi Conservation of Environment, Reproductive & Child Health, HIV/AIDS, Women empowerment, Promotion of SHGs, Monitoring of Evening OPD, Inculcation of Science. Besides, it has three coordinating branches at Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal.

To achieve Rights of the people through sustainable livelihood practices, empowering the women through micro credit, and making community health a reality.

Our Mission

  • Creation of mass awareness against ecological imbalances and environmental degradation; pollution control, afforestation and promoting social forestry.
  • To develop scientific spirit and temper among the masses and to inculcate the spirit of enquiry and reform;
  • Any other activities related to the promotion of health and living conditions of the people; to improve economic condition and to create alternative livelihood self help groups will be formed; to promote a credit based developmental society it may borrow from Nationalized Banks and Financial Institutions  with  pledge of security to borrow loan for on lending to the target groups;
  • Eradication of illiteracy, creating literary atmosphere, mass involvement in creative writing and discussions, holding of seminars and symposia;
  • Formation of cultural groups for promotion and development of cultural activities; and

Participation in activities aimed at promoting arts and culture and interaction with  like minded groups and organizations for exchange of views and ideas. 

Legal Registration

GHAROA is registered under Society Registration Act XXI of 1860 with Assam on 14th December 1994 and its registration No. is 1907. Gharoa is also registered for receiving foreign grants under FCR Act number 020820041. It is also registered under IT Act.

Organizational Structure

GHAROA is governed by an Executive Board consisting of 11 eminent persons nominated democratically by its general body. There is a decentralized Management system headed by Coordinator, who is supported by skilled staff. It has one office of the MNGO at Haflong in Dima Hasso( N.C.Hills) and one branch office at Badarpur in Barak Valley. One well set up office with Clinic for the Targeted Intervention Project of Injecting Drug Users at Nagaon. The various programme and project team performances are monitored at regular intervals during staff meetings. Gharoa places lots of emphasis on upgrading skills and capacities of its staff. For this purpose need based training are regularly organized. Besides, executives and staff members also deputed for training to other organizations of repute in the country.
