ENVIRONMENT CONSERVATION

GHAROA launched its first Environment programme on 5th June 1992 and thereafter headed towards a Green Lumding mission. With the help of the Engineering Department of the Railway and Social Forestry Department, the first mass plantation was held in July 1992 in two vacant lands of Lumding. Hundreds of Students, Railway Officials, Cadets of Bharat Scouts and Guides, RPSF Personnel, Teachers and Enthusiasts joined the yearlong programme. Parks and roadside plantations and plantations near the railway track were coordinately done.

With the advent of the plantation, programme emphasis was given to Environment Education and the Centre for Environment Education- Northeast extended its help by supplying books, posters charts, and games and conducting workshops for Teachers. Later on, with the financial help of the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MOEF), New Delhi Eco clubs were formed in Schools. Annual Exhibitions and conferences were conducted among the member of the Eco Clubs and students were taken to visit the National Parks and Sanctuaries.

National Green Corpse replaced the ECO Clubs and GHAROA coordinated 50 Clubs in the Hojai subdivision.

It started an advocacy programme along with other State level, National and International NGOs to declare Lumding Forest as Elephant Reserve and it was later on accepted by the Government. GHAROA relentlessly works to mitigate Human Elephant Conflict and closely works with Railways and Forests Officials through organizing workshops, training and round table conferences.
